AT&T to allow Internet voice calls on Apple’s iPhone

AT&T, which has exclusive rights to the iPhone, said in a statement that the company informed Apple and the U.S. Federal Communications Commission of its decision, which was in response to a regulatory inquiry into the wireless industry.

“Today’s decision was made after evaluating our customers’ expectations and use of the device compared to dozens of others we offer,” said Ralph de la Vega, head of AT&T Mobility & Consumer Markets.

The move allows Skype, owned by eBay Inc (EBAY.O), to file an application with Apple, which would then review it and decide whether to approve the app for its iPhone.

AT&T MMS for iPhone available!

Finally! AT&T enables MMS for the iPhone.

To begin using MMS, you’ll need to connect your phone to iTunes to receive an update. A dialog box should tell you the update is available, but if it doesn’t, you can always click on the “check for update” button on the panel to the left. When you’re done, you should have carrier version “AT&T 5.5″ running on iPhone version 3.1.

When will the iPhone Support Flash?

With the introduction of the latest Android smartphone named Hero this week also came the announcement that it will support Flash. In addition, the new Palm Pre will support Flash by the end of the year through a firmware update.

What’s up with Apple and Adobe’s relationship? One would think that based on both companies roots heavily backed by graphic designers alike that Flash & the iPhone would go hand in hand.

The Answer: Apple is too afraid to allow another software development platform to reside on its hardware and rightfully so.

Again, it’s a battle of control.

iPhone Update 3.0 Download Finally Here!

I love my iPhone, it’s a gadget that I can honestly say saves me time. Being a converted BlackBerry user, there’s a few things that I have missed though. The first of which is having the ability to Cut, Copy & Paste. While this seemed like a no-brainer function to have, up until this release it was impossible to do. The other limitation that drives me crazy about the current 2.0 software version is the inability to attach photos, video and contact info to SMS messages, another thing that the BlackBerry did very well.

Software Update 3.0

Software Update 3.0

In typical Apple fashion, almost all of the shortcomings of the current iPhone software will be addressed in the new 3.0 software update, which will be available for download starting tomorrow June 17th. The update will be free for iPhone users, iTouch users will have to pay a one-time fee of around 10 bucks. Here are the highlights of the new 3.0 software release:

- Copy & Paste Support (finally!)
- Landscape Keyboard option when texting
- Photo, Video, Contact support for SMS texting
- Centralized search capability
- Record Voice Memos
- Improved Calendar with CalDAV support
- Buy movies, TV shows and Audiobooks from device
- Enhanced Stock Application
- Peer to Peer app support for gaming, etc.
- A bunch of other things

Here’s a complete list of 3.0 enhancements from Apple’s website

The primary thing that I don’t like about the upgrade is that they’re not offering Internet Tethering support in the US. This would allow you to hook your iPhone to your Laptop to browse the Internet. I’m sure that has something to do with the AT&T monopoly. I’m sure a not so legal workaround to this limitation will appear within time :-)

How to Download the 3.0 Update (available 6/17):

1. Simply open up iTunes with your iPhone / iTouch attached.
2. Click on your device under the “Devices” left-hand menu.
3. Click the “Check for Update” button and follow the steps.
