Microsoft’s Bing Search For Mobile

Microsoft has added mobile support for its new Bing search engine by visiting m.bing.com on your web-enabled phone. You can also visit the mobile page on your computer and type in your phone number. The site will send you a text message that will allow you to sign up.

Some of the cool features include the ability for mobile Bing to save three locations for you. For example: Home, work, etc. From these saved locations you can quickly get directions from these points. Searches also will default around your stored locations unless otherwise specified.

While Google maps for the browser may have more features such as street view, Microsoft’s Bing for mobile has a nice interface for handheld devices.

What the heck is a sitemap?

A sitemap is basically a page or pages that serves as a directory by listing all the links to all documents and files found in a website. It is not merely a random listing of links, but organized in such a way that it gives the web user an idea of how all the information that can be found in the site fits into an outline or framework. It is like viewing the table of contents of a book, or viewing the “concept map” of the site’s content.

Why should I use sitemaps?

No page will be left unturned, all pages of your website will be considered by Google and Bing for listing. This potentially increases exposure which equals higher traffic to your web site.

How do I create a sitemap?

Free online websites are the easiest way to create sitemaps. http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ – This site creates Google, Yahoo & Bing- formatted site maps on the fly and will even update the pages for you. No programming knowledge needed.

As much as I hate to say it, Microsoft Bing is here. It looks like Google with a pretty background to me. We went ahead this morning and verified that our site was listed properly on Bing, below are the steps for you to do the same:

1. Go to the Bing Webmaster Center at: http://www.bing.com/webmaster/. You will have to create a Windows Live account to log in.

2. After logging in, click the “Add a Site” button.

3. After submitting the form you have to add some verification code to your site (either XML or a META tag). This is not as hard as it sounds.

4. Sit back and wait for Bing to “crawl” your site.

Coming soon to your desktop operating system June 3rd. – Microsoft’s new search engine called ‘Bing’. I’m sure that Redmond will do all it can to take market share away from Google. It will be interesting to see what get roles out in their automatic updates… Maybe a new default page or toolbar???
